Jalan Impian - The Musical!

OBJECTIVES

Jalan Impian hopes to accomplish the following:-
1

Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Hulu Langat, Selangor was started by parents of special children to meet their childrens' educational and social needs. Registered as a non-profit organisation, the Home relies solely on the generosity of corporate and private sponsors to meet all running costs. The proceeds collected would be used to subsidize costs of the day-to-day running of the Home, including:-

  • Rent
  • Medical needs - ie medication, medical care and therapy for the special children
  • Cost of repair of equipmen
  • Amenities
  • Purchase of educational materials for the special children
  • Food bills
  • Home administration costs
  • Teachers' allowances and training needs
2
Promote the use of English

Jalan Impian is a purpose-written musical based on the experiences of students at a professional stage school set in Malaysia, and is written primarily in English, with a smattering of other languages to lend some authenticity to the show. Sandra Sodhy has had vast experience in speech training (for educational and management purposes as well as for stage, radio and TV) and will try to ensure that the students not only speak fluently and clearly, but also understand and practise good diction, intonation, and appropriate tone.

3
Develop the children's creative talent and a love for the arts

The children are being taught by professionals in their respective fields in order for them to learn the proper performance techniques and develop their natural talents in a positive and safe environment.

In this way, the children will be exposed to the performing arts and get chance to experience first-hand the processes involved in producing a professional show.

4
Develop more confident, well-rounded individuals

The script has been specially written to allow the 50-odd child performers to sing, dance and act, so all the children will be given an opportunity to shine on stage. This should help build their confidence and help them realize that they are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to.

Weekly rehearsals every Saturday (2 - 8 pm) and Sunday (1 - 6 pm) teach them focus and discipline. Attendance is compulsory; three unexplained absences will ensure dismissal. Besides all this, the students are expected to maintain good grades in school, as their participation should not interfere with their schoolwork.

5
Promote good Malaysian values

The show boasts a multiracial cast, reflecting the population of Malaysia. We have child performers of Malay, Chinese, Indian and other descent. Besides a spirit of Muhibbah, the show promotes the values of friendship, helping others in need, not pre-judging others, being independent, and most importantly, not to give up but to believe in yourself, hold on to your dreams and reach for the stars!
